EU launches Resettlement Plan Committee for 2026-2027

On November 7, the European Commission introduced a new High-Level Committee on Resettlement and Humanitarian Admission, aimed at planning resettlement efforts for 2026 and 2027.

The committee will assist in implementing the Union Framework Regulation, which creates a permanent, harmonized system for resettling individuals seeking protection in the EU. The committee, formed as part of the EU’s Migration and Asylum Pact, met for the first time in Brussels. It includes representatives from EU member states interior ministries, UNHCR, IOM and the EUAA. Its focus is on establishing safe and legal pathways for refugees and vulnerable individuals.

The committee will help determine the number of refugees to be admitted and the regions from which they should be resettled. This initiative builds on previous resettlement plans that have helped over 119,000 people since 2015.

MEP Leoluca Orlando highlighted that, by 2025, three million refugees will need resettlement, emphasizing the need to speed up the process and improve the quality of resettlement. He also stressed the importance of increased support for third countries hosting refugees and investment in integration efforts to help refugees adapt to their new communities.
