New York judge Juan Merchan, who is overseeing Donald Trump’s case regarding payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels for her silence, has postponed the decision on whether the former president is entitled to immunity from the charges, according to The Hill.
Merchan informed both Trump’s defense attorneys and the prosecution that the case would be paused until November 19. By that date, prosecutors are required to provide the judge with new information about how Trump’s potential re-election as U.S. president might impact sentencing.
Merchan announced his decision on the same day he was scheduled to address the prosecution’s motion regarding whether presidential immunity applies to Trump following a ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court. The sentencing date for the elected president remains unchanged, set for November 26.
This case involves the so-called “porn money” issue, where in May, Trump was found guilty of falsifying business records to conceal a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels in exchange for her silence about an alleged sexual encounter she had with Trump years earlier, prior to the 2016 U.S. elections.
