The European Commission has allocated €16 million in emergency funding to the Finnish Border Guard to cover additional costs in fighting illegal immigration on the eastern border, the Finnish Border Guard reported.
The funding, drawn from one of the EU’s internal affairs funds, will cover additional costs for Finnish border guards, including personnel expenses, travel and accommodation costs, as well as procurement of various services and equipment.
These measures will strengthen control over Finland’s eastern border and counter illegal migration at border crossing points, according to the statement.
In April, the Finnish government kept its border with Russia closed indefinitely to address the hybrid migration crisis that has intensified since the fall of 2023.
