Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated at the COP29 climate summit in Baku that countries should continue using fossil fuels alongside transitioning to renewable energy, Politico reports.
Orban argued that “we must keep promoting the ‘green’ transition while continuing to use natural gas, oil, and nuclear energy.”
“We cannot sacrifice our industry or agriculture in this process,” said the Hungarian Prime Minister, adding that countries should not “impose unrealistic quotas or burdensome regulations on farmers and businesses.”
Concluding his speech at COP29, Orban expressed his belief in Europe’s ability to lead the world in fighting climate change “without endangering the prosperity of our industry and agriculture.”
Viktor Orban is one of the few EU leaders attending the summit in Azerbaijan, unlike German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
