Florence has introduced new measures to combat overtourism, including banning key boxes used by short-term rental landlords and restricting the use of tour guide loudspeakers. The city is famous for its Renaissance art and architecture and has seen a surge in visitors.
This in effect has caused resentment among residents who feel priced out of their homes. The city’s 10-point plan, approved ahead of the G7 tourism summit, also targets the increasing use of golf carts by tour guides in restricted areas. These changes aim to preserve Florence’s heritage and improve livability for both residents and visitors.
In the first nine months of 2024, Florence welcomed over 7.8 million tourists, overwhelming its UNESCO-listed center. The city’s council stated that such mass tourism is unsustainable and harms its cultural and social fabric.
Florence joins other Italian cities, like Pompeii and Venice, in taking action against mass tourism. However, Italy’s Tourism Minister Daniela Santanche maintains that instead of limiting visitors, the country should focus on improving tourism management to benefit local economies.
