Severe flooding strikes Sicily as heavy rain causes widespread damage

Intense rainfall battered Sicily from Tuesday to Wednesday, triggering severe flooding and causing significant damage across the region.

The heavy rains swept vehicles into the sea and severely impacted homes and infrastructure.

Italian firefighters carried out more than 70 rescue operations, responding to flooding, blocked roads, and people trapped in their homes or vehicles. The municipalities most affected by the deluge were Torre Archirafi, Riposto, Giarre, Acireale, and Aci Sant’Antonio.

In the small village of Altarello, four residents were rescued from the lower floors of their flooded home as the severe weather disrupted daily life throughout the region.
