Nora Achahbar, the Dutch state secretary for Benefits and Customs, will resign later today due to racist remarks made during a Cabinet meeting following the violence in Amsterdam last week.
According to national media, the comments were made during a Council of Ministers meeting last Monday. Achahbar, a former judge with a Moroccan background, acknowledged the remarks were made within the governing cabinet.
Other ministers from the conservative New Social Contract (NSC) party, one of the four coalition parties, have also expressed concerns about rising tensions within the government.
The violence in Amsterdam occurred last week when pro-Palestinian protesters clashed with Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters, drawing international condemnation. European leaders condemned the attacks on Israeli supporters as antisemitic, while some social media users claimed Maccabi fans had provoked the violence in the lead-up to the match.
Geert Wilders, leader of the right-wing Freedom Party (PVV), a coalition partner, used a parliamentary debate to call for the revocation of passports from people with dual nationality and blamed Moroccans for the violence.
