Sweden’s ‘newspaper of record’ quits X

Dagens Nyheter (DN), a liberal newspaper widely considered Sweden’s newspaper of record, has decided to stop posting on X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter, following the London Guardian’s move to leave the platform days ago.

Editor-in-Chief Peter Wolodarski points to Elon Musk’s leadership changes as a key factor.

“Since Elon Musk took over, the platform has increasingly merged with his own and Donald Trump’s political ambitions, while the climate at X has become more harsh and extreme. Therefore, we will not currently publish anything there from our official accounts,” Wolodarski explained.

DN’s decision mirrors that of Aftonbladet, which exited the platform last year. Meanwhile, other Swedish media outlets like SvD and Dagens ETC are choosing to stay. This announcement from DN came just after the British newspaper The Guardian also decided to leave X for similar reasons.
