Hungary criticizes Biden’s approval for Ukraine to strike Russia with U.S. weapons

Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó strongly criticized the U.S. for allowing Ukraine to use American-supplied long-range missiles to target Russia, warning that the decision could “expand the Ukraine war to a global scale.”

In a Facebook post, Szijjártó argued that the victory of Donald Trump in the U.S. election has created a new dynamic where “the people are calling for peace,” contrasting with what Budapest views as an escalation of the conflict.

The pro-war mainstream has launched a final, desperate attack on the new reality, Szijjártó wrote, adding that these forces are willing to risk global war by expanding the conflict.

On Sunday, President Joe Biden authorized Ukraine to strike deeper into Russian territory using U.S.-provided missiles, a move seen as a significant step forward for Ukrainian forces as they prepare for a major Russian and North Korean assault.

Szijjártó is heading to Brussels for a meeting of EU foreign ministers, the first since the U.S. election, where he will continue to advocate for de-escalation amid Hungary’s ongoing relations with Moscow, despite the war in Ukraine.
