Police in Georgia disperse opposition protest: arrests reported

In the Georgian capital of Tbilisi, police dispersed protesters on the morning of November 19 who had gathered on Melikishvili Avenue to contest the results of the parliamentary elections.

A large number of police officers, special forces, and water cannons were deployed to the protest site.

According to “Georgia Online,” the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) issued a statement early in the morning, urging the protesters and organizers to clear the area of makeshift structures, cease demonstrations on the roadway, and protest within the limits set by law. At the site, MIA representatives gave organizers and participants 15 minutes to clear the roadway. After this deadline, law enforcement removed the makeshift structures.

The previous day, members of the Georgian opposition had gathered near the national university building in Tbilisi and announced their intention to stay there overnight.
