Russian gas imports to the Czech Republic have sharply increased in recent weeks. In November, over 95% of gas deliveries came from Slovakia, whereas Germany had previously been the primary source.
Analysts attribute this trend to lower prices for Russian gas and high transportation fees for deliveries via Germany. According to Net4Gas, Russian gas imports to the Czech Republic declined following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine but began gradually increasing last fall, albeit remaining a minority. In recent weeks, there has been a significant rise in supplies through Slovakia, while volumes from Germany have decreased.
Experts suggest that the majority of gas supplied from Slovakia is of Russian origin. While its exact source cannot be confirmed, analysts believe it is highly likely. The primary driver of this increase is the price advantage of Russian gas, supported by lower transportation fees of 2.5 euros per megawatt-hour.
Although alternative sources like Algeria contribute small amounts of gas, their share remains minimal. Most imported gas stays within the country. To avoid sanctions, traders continue to legally import Russian gas, driven by market demand.
