The watch of the captain who saved hundreds of Titanic passengers was sold at auction

At a British auction held by Henry Aldridge and Son in Wiltshire, the pocket watch of the captain who saved over 700 passengers after the Titanic collided with an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean was sold.

The 18-carat gold pocket watch fetched a record price of nearly 2 million euros. The watch was gifted to Sir Arthur Rostron by the widow of the wealthiest man aboard the Titanic, John Jacob Astor, who perished in the tragedy. Rostron was the captain of the RMS Carpathia, a passenger ship traveling from New York to Europe when the Titanic struck the iceberg.

On April 15, 1912, the Carpathia received a distress signal: “We have struck an iceberg, help us.” The Carpathia reached the Titanic in just two hours at full speed, with Rostron helping to rescue over 700 passengers from the sinking ship that same day.
