A banana taped to a wall sold at auction for $6.2 million dollars

A banana duct-taped to a wall was sold at a Sotheby’s auction in New York on November 20 for $6.2 million. The auction house announced the sale on its website.

The banana was taped precisely 160 centimeters above the floor. The piece, titled Comedian, was created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. Initially estimated at $1–1.5 million, the artwork ultimately sold for $6,240,000.

The buyer, Justin Sun, a young cryptocurrency entrepreneur of Chinese descent, described the work as a cultural phenomenon that “bridges the worlds of art, memes, and the crypto community.” He added that he plans to eat the banana soon “as part of this unique artistic experience, paying tribute to its place in both art history and popular culture.”
