Activity of Icelandic volcano erupting for the seventh time this year has peaked

A volcano on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland has been spewing lava and ash for the second consecutive day. Scientists report that its activity has reached its peak.

Located in the southwest of the peninsula, the volcano is erupting for the seventh time this year. According to experts, the current eruption is less intense compared to the last one in August, and its activity has already peaked.

Air travel remains unaffected. Keflavik International Airport stated that operations are running as normal and the airport’s infrastructure is unharmed.

Meanwhile, the popular geothermal spa resort Blue Lagoon evacuated its guests due to its proximity to the eruption zone. The town of Grindavik, which was evacuated during a volcanic event last December, remains nearly deserted. Approximately 50 homes, briefly reoccupied by residents, have been evacuated again for safety reasons.

Iceland, situated on the boundary between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, is one of the world’s most seismically active regions. The country is home to over 30 active volcanoes.

The most disruptive eruption in recent decades was that of Eyjafjallajökull in 2010, which released a massive ash cloud, causing widespread disruption to air travel across Europe.
