Pro-Palestinian tent protest dismantled after 200 days in Sweden

In Gothenburg, Sweden, authorities began dismantling a tent camp set up by pro-Palestinian protesters outside the University of Gothenburg. The camp had stood for nearly 200 days.

Police announced earlier this week that the square in front of the university needed to be cleared, setting a deadline of 6 a.m. on Friday. The deadline was chosen ahead of a rally planned by the Liberal Party at the same location at 10 a.m., an event openly aimed at facilitating the camp’s removal.

Organizers of the protest described the authorities’ actions as “anti-democratic.”

Early on November 22, police initiated a “soft” dismantling of the camp, where several hundred activists remained. Officers began escorting protesters who refused to leave voluntarily, along with their belongings. Some activists chained themselves to stationary objects within the camp to delay the clearance, requiring police to free them before removal.

Protesters shouted “Shame!” at police as they were led away.

Witnesses reported that while the situation was tense, there were no violent clashes.
