U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has selected a new nominee for Attorney General following Matt Gaetz’s withdrawal. The choice is former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Trump announced Bondi’s nomination just hours after Gaetz removed himself from consideration.
“For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans – Not anymore,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform. “Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting Crime, and Making America Safe Again. I have known Pam for many years — She is smart and tough, and is an AMERICA FIRST Fighter, who will do a terrific job as Attorney General!”
Unofficial sources suggest that Bondi’s name had been considered among other candidates before Gaetz was chosen. Once Gaetz decided to step aside, her name quickly resurfaced. Trump reportedly invited Bondi to a meeting at Mar-a-Lago on Thursday evening before formally offering her the position.
Back in 2018, during Trump’s previous presidency, Bondi was considered for the role after then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions was dismissed. Bondi is also known to have strong relationships with key figures in Trump’s inner circle.
Trump allies believe that Bondi’s confirmation process will face significantly fewer obstacles compared to what Gaetz might have encountered.
