Finnish pilots’ strike to cancel 300 flights in December, affecting 33,000 passengers

A two-day pilots’ strike by Finnair in Finland is set to disrupt holiday travel plans, with approximately 300 flights canceled and impacting about 33,000 passengers.

The strike, scheduled for December 9 and 13, comes after three months of negotiations between the pilots’ union and the airline failed to resolve disputes over the collective agreement. Talks “reached a deadlock,” according to the union.

Finnair expressed regret over the strike, stating that it may disrupt the pre-Christmas plans of thousands. The airline added that the impact could extend beyond the strike days, potentially affecting flights in the days leading up to and following the planned industrial action.

This disruption comes amid a wave of strikes across Europe. Workers in Greece held a nationwide strike across multiple sectors, Italy saw healthcare workers on strike, and members of the Czech security forces also engaged in industrial action earlier this week.
