Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of social media platform X, has hinted at an interest in purchasing the left-leaning news channel MSNBC.
The potential sale comes as the channel faces plummeting viewership following Kamala Harris’s loss to Donald Trump in the recent presidential election.
Comcast, MSNBC’s parent company, is reportedly mulling over a sale as part of a strategic restructuring. The network, along with USA Network and CNBC, could become part of a new entity called SpinCo. While Comcast frames this move as forward-thinking, insiders reveal concerns within MSNBC over possible changes to its branding, logo, and headquarters.
Musk joined the speculation when Donald Trump Jr. posted a meme on X mocking MSNBC’s troubles, captioned “Sold to lowest bid.” Musk playfully replied, “How much does it cost?”
MSNBC has seen its audience shrink by 38% since the election, with CNN also experiencing a 27% drop. This decline underscores the challenges liberal-leaning media outlets face in a shifting political landscape.
Adding to the humor, podcaster and Trump supporter Joe Rogan chimed in, joking that if Musk buys the channel, he’d replace MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow. Rogan quipped, “I’ll wear the same clothes, the same glasses, and come up with the same lies.” Musk simply replied, “Deal.”
Musk, whose fortune is estimated at $314 billion, has already made waves in the media world with his $44 billion purchase of Twitter (now X) in 2022. While MSNBC’s standalone value remains unclear, Comcast’s overall market worth is roughly $166 billion, making it a notable asset should Musk seriously consider the acquisition.
