On the evening of Wednesday, November 27, climate activists staged a protest by blocking traffic on the Wisłostrada, one of the main expressways in Warsaw, located along the left bank of the Vistula River.
The initiative “Last Generation” stated that this was the “largest blockade of Wisłostrada.” Twenty-two participants took part in the protest, stopping traffic completely three times.
The protest sparked anger among drivers, some of whom got out of their cars and attempted to physically remove the protesters from the road.
The police, present at the scene, issued 16 administrative fines to the protesters.
Earlier, on Monday, the activists blocked a tunnel on Wisłostrada in an attempt to draw attention to their demands. They are calling for all revenues from the construction of new roads and highways to be directed toward the development of local public transport. Additionally, they are demanding the introduction of a unified monthly transportation pass for regional transport across Poland, costing 50 zlotys.
In October, Polish authorities filed charges against activists who, during a protest in March, threw orange paint on the famous mermaid statue on the Vistula River promenade in Warsaw.
