A recent Ifop-Fiducial poll for Sud Radio reveals that more than 50% of French citizens believe Prime Minister Michel Barnier’s minority government should step down due to public discontent over the proposed budget.
The survey showed that 53% of respondents support this view, with 67% opposing Barnier’s budget plan, which aims to address France’s rising national deficit through €60 billion in tax increases and spending cuts. Only 33% expressed approval for the budget.
The government faces the risk of collapse before Christmas, potentially as soon as next week, if a vote of no confidence led by far-right and left-wing opponents succeeds—an outcome Barnier’s government is expected to lose.
The Ifop-Fiducial survey, conducted on November 26 and 27, involved 1,006 participants.
In a separate survey conducted by Elabe for BFM TV on Wednesday, 63% of respondents indicated that President Emmanuel Macron should resign if Barnier’s government falls.
