The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has initiated a large-scale antitrust investigation into Microsoft, Bloomberg reports, citing sources.
The regulator intends to thoroughly examine all aspects of the corporation’s activities. The investigation will focus on areas such as cloud computing, software licensing, cybersecurity offerings and artificial intelligence products.
Microsoft, as one of the largest contractors for the U.S. government, receives multi-billion-dollar contracts from federal agencies. However, FTC experts have expressed concerns over the company’s “failures in cybersecurity.” These include several incidents where vulnerabilities in Microsoft products led to data breaches, including breaches involving government agencies.
Additionally, the regulator is scrutinizing the company’s dominant position in the markets for cloud technologies and software licensing. Competitors have previously alleged that Microsoft exploits its position to push its products and create barriers for other market players.
AI-based products have also become a significant focus of analysis. Microsoft is actively advancing AI technologies, including through investments in OpenAI and the integration of AI into its platforms. Regulators are concerned that this could lead to monopolization of key segments within the AI sector.
According to Bloomberg, the investigation is in its early stages, and its findings could significantly impact Microsoft’s future operations.
