“Alternative for Germany” insists on Germany’s withdrawal from the European Union

The party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) has emphasized its demand for Germany to leave the European Union (EU) in the final draft of its election manifesto.

The political party’s statement was published by Der Spiegel under the headline: “Out of the EU, Drop the Euro!” The publication notes that AfD is returning to its anti-European stance in the finalized draft of its manifesto, quoting the document:

We consider Germany’s exit from the European Union and the creation of a new European community to be necessary. Germany must leave the euro system and introduce a stable national currency.

At the same time, the party stresses that a “radical break with the EU would be counterproductive.” Instead, the transition to a new system should be discussed through consensus with both current EU member states and new interested parties. AfD aims to replace the EU with a “group of economic interests.”

The draft also dedicates several pages to security policy. Russia is portrayed as a gas supplier with trade that should be resumed. Ukraine, according to the manifesto, should determine its future as a neutral state “outside the EU and NATO.”

The key proposal is set to be discussed and finalized at AfD’s federal party conference in January 2025.
