In a fiery speech in the European Parliament, FPÖ MEP Petra Steger blasted EU leaders for their reckless approach to the Ukraine conflict, accusing them of warmongering and leading Europe to the brink of war.
She specifically targeted EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, EU Foreign Commissioner Josep Borrell, and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.
Steger questioned the EU’s policy, asking, “Are you abandoned by all good spirits? If you continue like this, you will steer Europe straight into the war!” She condemned plans to send German Taurus missiles and other long-range weapons to Ukraine, questioning the EU’s commitment to peace. “How far should your so-called unconditional solidarity go? Is this the alleged peace project of the European Union?” she said, emphasizing that the EU seems only willing to consider peace talks once the first bombs fall on European soil.

Steger argued that EU leaders were pushing for escalation instead of diplomacy. “Since the beginning of this hideous war, there has not been a single serious EU peace initiative,” she stated, accusing von der Leyen and her supporters of escalating the conflict with continuous arms shipments.
She also highlighted Europe’s economic struggles, pointing out that while the U.S. defense industry profits from the war, European industries are on the brink, and citizens face skyrocketing energy costs.
Steger called for a shift in EU strategy, urging leaders to prioritize dialogue over weapons. “We call for an independent European peace policy that relies on negotiations instead of arms deliveries,” she said, stressing that Europe needs responsible politicians who prioritize citizens’ economic and security interests.
