A new Danish study by Jyllands-Posten has raised concerns about the integration of Muslim immigrants in Denmark, revealing some 54% of Muslims believe the Quran should always be followed, even when it contradicts Western values.
One in five even think Denmark’s constitution should be rewritten to include Sharia law.
The study also highlights stark divides on various social issues. For instance, half of the respondents reject premarital sex, and 60% struggle to accept homosexuality, with many unable to imagine accepting a gay child. On the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, nearly half of the respondents believe Israel should cease to exist, and 35% supported the Hamas attacks on Israel in October 2023.
While 75% of participants support democratic elections, 20% still favor Sharia law over Danish laws when the two clash. Sociologist Ruud Koopmans, an expert in migration and integration, argues that Islam, as currently practiced, is incompatible with Western democratic values, pointing out that democracy, human rights, and individual freedoms are not fully embraced in any Muslim-majority country.
