Polish farmers plan protests, including at border with Ukraine

On Tuesday, farmers across Poland will hold protests in over 20 locations to highlight their concerns about the so-called “chain law” and the risks associated with a free trade agreement with South American countries under Mercosur.

One of the warning demonstrations will take place in Medyka, near the border with Ukraine. The farmers emphasize that the protests are a cautionary measure against the influx of agricultural goods from outside the European Union. This includes concerns about the European Commission’s plans to sign a free trade agreement with South America.

“There is still uncertainty about whether this agreement will be signed and whether these goods will enter the EU duty-free. Additionally, there is an unresolved issue with agricultural goods from Ukraine. Protective measures are still not being enforced,” said Damian Murawiec, one of the protest organizers.

Farmers also oppose the “chain law,” which prohibits keeping animals on chains or in enclosures deemed too small.

The protests aim to draw attention to broader issues such as the perceived misdirection of the EU’s Green Deal and challenges in the energy transition.
