Scholz reaffirms hesitation on Ukraine’s NATO accession and TAURUS missile deliveries

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reiterated his cautious stance on Ukraine’s rapid NATO membership and the delivery of long-range TAURUS missiles during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, as reported by Deutsche Welle.

Scholz emphasized that Ukraine’s path to NATO had already been outlined during summits in Vilnius and Washington, indicating no further decisions are currently necessary. These summits confirmed Ukraine’s eventual NATO membership but did not establish a timeline.

Addressing the potential supply of TAURUS missiles, Scholz reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting Ukraine with weapons. However, he stressed that Berlin maintains “special considerations” regarding the deployment of certain systems, particularly those with extended range. These considerations are tied to concerns about the targeting and operational control of such weapons.

Germany has faced ongoing pressure to expand its military assistance to Ukraine, but Scholz’s comments reflect a measured approach aimed at balancing support for Kyiv with broader strategic and security concerns.
