Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has called on authorities to take firm action against climate activists who block roads.
While Tusk did not specify the type of decisive measures he expects, he emphasized that road blockades pose a threat to the state and all road users. “Today, I urged the relevant services to respond decisively and counter such actions,” Tusk stated.
Although the prime minister did not mention “Last Generation” by name, it is widely assumed that his remarks were directed at this organization. Its activists have been blocking the Wisłostrada—a major expressway in Warsaw along the Vistula River—for several days, provoking strong reactions from the city’s residents.
The demands of “Last Generation” in connection with their protest in Warsaw are well known. The group is calling for 100% of funds allocated for new highways and motorways to be redirected to regional public transportation. They also advocate for a nationwide regional transport pass priced at 50 złoty per month.
Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski, a presidential candidate for the Civic Coalition, criticized the actions of “Last Generation” a few days ago. “I believe they are harming their own cause. Regardless of the ideas they stand for, such blockades primarily hurt their agenda and, moreover, are illegal,” he said.
