The South Korean Parliament has officially proposed impeaching President Yoon Suk-yeol, with a vote expected to take place within the next 24-72 hours.
The move comes after the president declared martial law, citing the need to combat “pro-North Korean forces.” This followed the opposition’s support for a budget reduction bill and their submission of impeachment motions against several high-ranking officials. Yoon Suk-yeol claimed these actions threatened governmental stability.
During a parliamentary session, despite attempts to block the building with special forces, 190 out of 300 members attended and unanimously voted to overturn the martial law. The president was compelled to revoke his decision, and the military command established for the martial law regime was disbanded.
The opposition has accused the president and his associates of attempting a coup. Votes on the impeachment of Yoon Suk-yeol and the defense minister are scheduled for December 6-7. To remove the president, 200 out of 300 parliamentary votes are required, including support from at least 18 members of the ruling party.
