Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to discuss key issues, including the situation in Ukraine, developments in the Middle East, and pathways to a fair and sustainable peace.
The leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to rebuilding Ukraine after the war.
Meloni congratulated Orbán on Hungary’s successful start to its EU Council presidency, the initiation of accession talks with Albania, and progress in expanding the Schengen Zone to include Bulgaria and Romania.
Another major topic of discussion was combating illegal migration. The leaders emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation to address the root causes of migration and tackle human trafficking.
Previously, Orbán had also met with Pope Francis to discuss Ukraine. During his EU presidency, the Hungarian Prime Minister made unsanctioned visits to Russia and China, where he advocated for “peace in Ukraine.” However, his initiatives faced criticism for their lack of concrete results and a clear plan to end the conflict.
Recently, Orbán expressed concern, stating that the risk of war escalation “has never been higher.”
