A majority of French citizens are in favor of President Emmanuel Macron stepping down, with plans for the 2027 presidential elections being moved up to 2025. This is according to a poll conducted by Cluster17 for Le Point magazine.
The survey, conducted just days before the collapse of Prime Minister Michel Barnier’s government, found that 54% of respondents supported Macron’s resignation. This idea is particularly popular among the “anti-system” electorate, which includes voters from left-wing and right-wing parties. In contrast, moderate voters largely do not support early presidential elections.
Earlier this week, Macron announced that he would not resign before the end of his second five-year term in 2027.
Marine Le Pen, leader of the right-wing National Rally party, whose support was crucial in bringing down Barnier, refrained from calling for the president’s resignation. On Wednesday, she stated that the decision should come from Macron himself and his conscience.
It is worth noting that on the evening of December 4, the National Assembly voted to pass a motion of no confidence in Barnier’s government, marking the first such resignation since 1962.
