Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó believes that with Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election, the end of the Russia-Ukraine war “has never seemed so close.”
Szijjártó made these remarks after meeting with Mike Voltz, the newly appointed U.S. National Security Advisor. According to Szijjártó, while the war’s end feels more attainable following Trump’s election, the threat of escalation remains stronger than ever.
We are very eager for Donald Trump’s goal of a swift end to this war to become a reality, Szijjártó stated.
He shared that he and Voltz had a “friendly discussion” about bilateral relations and geopolitical issues, including the war in Ukraine. Szijjártó also noted that during the U.S. election campaign, the topic of the full-scale war in Ukraine was allegedly one of the central issues.
During the campaign, Republican candidate Donald Trump called for an immediate end to the war, while Democrat Kamala Harris, according to Szijjártó, supported its “continuation.”
Szijjártó further emphasized that the results of the U.S. election have created a “completely new” political reality that could contribute to peace in Europe.
It was also reported recently that after his election victory, Trump reached out multiple times to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to discuss his views on the Russia-Ukraine war.
