Iraqi refugee detained in Germany over suspicion of Christmas market attack plot

In Augsburg, Germany, a 37-year-old Iraqi asylum seeker was detained on suspicion of planning an attack at a Christmas market.

Authorities apprehended him on Wednesday evening at an asylum accommodation center. The suspect had been taking photographs of the Christkindlesmarkt, leading police to suspect surveillance activities.

As a safety measure, law enforcement officials detained the man, who had previously drawn attention due to social media posts praising ISIS. A foreign intelligence agency tipped off German authorities about his activities. According to Welt, Ali Al-G. arrived in Germany in early 2023 and applied for asylum. He is currently in custody, awaiting deportation.

Last week, reports also emerged about four individuals in Germany connected to Hamas who were accused of preparing attacks and unlawfully storing weapons.
