Storm Darragh disrupts travel at Schiphol airport, over 100 flights cancelled

Schiphol Airport is experiencing significant disruptions due to storm Darragh, which has brought strong winds and adverse weather conditions.

Passengers have been advised to expect delays and cancellations, as more than 100 flights were already grounded on Friday morning, with additional cancellations anticipated throughout the day depending on the weather’s progression. The airport’s website currently lists most upcoming departures as either cancelled or delayed by at least an hour. Travelers are urged to “take delays and cancellations into account.”

KLM, the Dutch airline with the highest number of flights at Schiphol, has cancelled over 90 flights so far. Passengers were preparing for delays as early as Thursday evening, and although terminals are not overly crowded, reaching the airport may be difficult due to the storm’s impact on roads and rail networks. The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute has issued warnings of debris and fallen trees, with wind gusts reaching 75-90 km/h.

Additionally, motorists should be aware of detours due to a junction on the A10 south motorway being closed until Monday morning. Drivers are advised to plan for extra travel time.

Storm Darragh is also set to impact the UK, where an amber warning for strong winds has been issued by the Met Office for the southwest of England. The warning is in effect from 15:00 GMT on Friday until early Sunday, with advice to avoid exposed coastal areas and exercise caution while travelling.

Jet2.com has warned of potential disruptions in the UK as well, advising passengers to allow extra time for airport travel and check-in as the weather may continue to worsen over the next four days.
