The U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, following a meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris and against the backdrop of the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria, stated that Kyiv is seeking to reach an agreement to stop the war.
Trump wrote about this on his social media platform, Truth Social.
The future U.S. president, in the context of the Syrian rebels declaring the capital Damascus “free” from the regime, said that Bashar al-Assad is “no more” and has fled his country. According to Trump, Russia is no longer interested in defending its Syrian ally.
“Assad is gone. He has fled his country. His protector, Russia, Russia, Russia, led by Vladimir Putin, was not interested in protecting him any longer. There was no reason for Russia to be there in the first place. They lost all interest in Syria because of Ukraine, where close to 600,000 Russian soldiers lay wounded or dead, in a war that should never have started, and could go on forever,” Trump wrote.
He added that Russia and Iran are now in weakened states — one due to Ukraine and its struggling economy, and the other due to Israel and its military successes.
“Likewise, Zelenskyy and Ukraine would like to make a deal and stop the madness. They have ridiculously lost 400,000 soldiers, and many more civilians. There should be an immediate ceasefire and negotiations should begin,” Trump stated.
He noted that he “knows Vladimir well” and that it is now “his time to act.” Trump also added that China could help and that “the world is waiting” for this.
