German Chancellor Olaf Scholz plans to propose a vote of confidence in his government on Wednesday, December 11, which will pave the way for early elections.
Scholz is expected to submit a request for the vote of confidence to the Bundestag, a necessary step for calling early elections. According to the government’s press secretary, Scholz will submit the request in writing. The vote is scheduled for December 16.
It is anticipated that the Bundestag will vote to express no confidence in the government. Following this, Scholz will ask the president to dissolve the parliament, triggering the process for early elections, which are expected to take place on February 23.
Polls predict a strong showing for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), led by Friedrich Merz, with the party potentially securing over 30% of the vote. The right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) is projected to come in second with 18%. Scholz’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) is expected to receive 17%, while the Greens are forecast to win 13%.
