Biden announced pardons for nearly 1,500 Americans

U.S. President Joe Biden announced his decision to grant pardons to nearly 1,500 Americans who are serving sentences under house arrest, as well as to fully pardon 39 individuals convicted of nonviolent crimes.

According to the information, these pardons are part of a broader package of reforms aimed at improving prison conditions and reducing excessive punishments, especially for those convicted of nonviolent crimes. Biden stated that such actions would help “improve the justice system and reduce the number of people unjustly held in prisons.”

This decision marks the largest package of presidential pardons in a single day in modern U.S. history. The full list of pardoned individuals is expected to be released in the coming days and will likely include the names of those convicted of minor offenses as well as more serious criminals serving sentences for nonviolent crimes, such as violations of federal drug laws.

Earlier, U.S. President Joe Biden pardoned his son, Hunter Biden, who had been found guilty and was awaiting sentencing on two criminal cases. Back in September, both Biden and his press secretary assured that he did not plan to issue a pardon for his son.

In June, a jury found 54-year-old Hunter Biden guilty of concealing his drug addiction when purchasing a firearm in 2018. Hunter Biden became the first son of an incumbent president in U.S. history to be convicted of a crime.
