Orbán made a proposal to Putin on prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán proposed to Russian President Vladimir Putin the idea of a large-scale prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine, as well as a Christmas ceasefire.

This proposal was made during a telephone conversation between Orbán and Putin that took place the day before, according to Russian President’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

According to Peskov, the initiative was put forward in the context of the approaching Christmas holidays, and the Kremlin viewed it as an attempt to reduce tensions and provide an opportunity to improve the humanitarian situation. On the same day, Peskov stated, the Russian side sent its proposals regarding the prisoner exchange to the Hungarian Embassy in Moscow.

However, judging by Kyiv’s response, Ukraine did not support the initiative, the president’s spokesman emphasized.

Despite this, the Kremlin noted that consultations on the peace process in Ukraine will continue, and Moscow continues to support Hungary’s efforts to find ways to resolve the conflict.

Orbán continues his role as a mediator, seeking solutions that could lead to de-escalation in the region. Hungary intends to keep pursuing these efforts, hoping for any progress in addressing humanitarian issues related to the war in Ukraine.
