Outgoing Lithuanian Foreign Minister mysteriously promises to “escalate”

Gabrielius Landsbergis, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister, who is set to leave his position after the new government is sworn in, made a cryptic farewell statement, promising to “escalate.”

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Landsbergis reflected on his tenure, emphasizing that while his role as foreign minister is ending, the global struggle for the values of freedom continues.

“My small country has taken a big role in this battle, and your support has been a huge part of that, so I thank you all. But I’m not retiring, I decided to escalate,” Landsbergis wrote, without elaborating on what he meant by “escalation.”

He also called for continued support for “Ukrainians, Georgians, Taiwanese, and all freedom-loving peoples.”

Despite his international focus, Landsbergis faced challenges domestically, including frequent clashes with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda. His tenure as foreign minister was marked by tensions and political debates, which likely contributed to his limited popularity at home.

In Lithuania’s recent parliamentary elections, Landsbergis won a seat in the Seimas but chose to decline it, announcing a pause in his political career. His farewell hints at future plans, though the details remain unclear.
