Polish eco-activists announce largest blockade in Warsaw’s history

Activists from the Polish eco-organization “Last Generation” have announced their intention to stage the largest blockade in Warsaw’s history.

On Wednesday, they attempted to meet with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, but he rejected their request.

“If the prime minister does not engage with citizens, they will take to the streets,” the organization said in a statement released on Thursday. The activists stated that they plan to block one of Warsaw’s main transport arteries, Wisłostrada, on Friday at 1:00 PM.

Earlier, the “Last Generation” activists had staged blockades of Wisłostrada and other streets in the Polish capital, justifying their actions by the need to draw attention to climate issues and transport isolation. The organization members are demanding that all funds from the construction of new highways be redirected to the development of regional and local railways and bus routes, starting in 2025.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk has previously stated that he instructed authorities to take decisive action in response to road blockages, emphasizing that such actions pose a threat to the safety of the state and road users.
