The Romanian outlet Bursa reports a lack of evidence to substantiate claims of Russian involvement in Călin Georgescu’s victory in the first round of the presidential election.
Following a report by the Romanian Foreign Intelligence Service accusing Russia of election interference, no specific information supporting these allegations has been presented in the national public sphere.
According to Bursa, most allegations regarding Russian influence are being circulated in European media rather than Romanian outlets. These reports suggest that Georgescu’s campaign was allegedly supported by companies in Poland and Bulgaria.
In Poland, a Ukrainian firm was reportedly involved in creating campaign videos for Georgescu.
In Bulgaria, several online publications covered news about the candidate.
The so-called “Russian connection” has so far only been suggested in the latter case, with claims that the Bulgarian media network may have ties to Russia. However, Bursa expresses surprise that no evidence of Georgescu’s connections to Russia has been presented or discussed within Romania itself.
Earlier, Romania’s Constitutional Court annulled the results of the first round of elections, citing alleged Russian interference.
In his campaign, Georgescu called for an end to support for Ukraine and criticized NATO. The decision to void his victory has drawn criticism from figures close to Donald Trump.
