Kylian Mbappe’s lawyer confirmed on Thursday that Swedish prosecutors have dropped the rape and sexual assault investigation against the French soccer star. The inquiry, which centered on alleged incidents at a hotel in central Stockholm on October 10, 2024, had been ongoing since the accusations were made.
Mbappe, who plays for Real Madrid and the French national team, had firmly denied any wrongdoing in the case. While the prosecutors had not publicly named the suspect, they announced on Thursday that the investigation had been closed due to insufficient evidence.
“I confirm,” said Mbappe’s lawyer, Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard, in a text message to Reuters, confirming the end of the Swedish investigation. Canu-Bernard stated she would provide further comment later on Thursday.
Swedish Senior Prosecutor Marina Chirakova explained that during the investigation, a person was reasonably suspected of rape and two cases of sexual assault. However, she assessed that the evidence was not sufficient to continue the probe, leading to its closure.
In an earlier statement, Chirakova noted that the alleged victim had chosen not to participate further in the investigation, which contributed to the decision to drop the case. “The evidence secured in the investigation is not in itself sufficient to complete the preliminary investigation in light of the fact that the plaintiff no longer wishes to participate,” Chirakova wrote in the decision shared with Stockholm District Court.
The lawyer for the plaintiff declined to comment. Reports from Swedish media outlets, including SVT, Expressen, and Aftonbladet, had named Mbappe as the suspect in October, though his representatives quickly dismissed the allegations as “totally false” and “a slanderous rumour.”
Following the closure of the case, Real Madrid, Mbappe’s club, said they would not comment on the matter, and his PR firm has not yet responded to further inquiries.
