Argentine President Javier Milei has officially become an Italian citizen.
This status was granted during his visit to Rome, where Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni handed him the official document, according to ANSA.
The meeting took place at the government residence, where the two leaders exchanged warm greetings. Milei was granted Italian citizenship due to his family heritage: the president’s grandparents emigrated from Italy to Argentina in the early 20th century. Milei has repeatedly emphasized his Italian roots, claiming that he is “75% Italian.” A similar background applies to Pope Francis, who, like Milei, was born in Argentina and has Italian ancestry.
However, Giorgia Meloni’s decision sparked controversy in Italy. Members of the left-wing opposition criticized the move, accusing the prime minister of double standards. They pointed out that granting citizenship to Milei contrasts sharply with the refusal to extend the same rights to children of migrants born in Italy.
