Friedrich Merz, a candidate for the position of Chancellor of Germany, has stated that Ukrainian refugees should no longer receive the current “citizens’ benefits” (Bürgergeld), which are intended for residents of Germany, but instead should receive benefits similar to those provided to asylum seekers.
In a recent statement, Merz emphasized that the concept of Bürgergeld would be eliminated for incoming Ukrainian refugees. This shift would also be accompanied by immediate work permits for the refugees and an expedited process for recognizing their professional qualifications.
Merz’s proposal highlights the growing debate in Germany regarding the support provided to refugees and migrants, particularly in light of the ongoing war in Ukraine. His comments reflect a broader tension between maintaining support for those fleeing war and the economic pressures facing Germany in the current economic climate.
The idea of providing lower benefits to refugees has sparked a mixed response: some argue that it could undermine Germany’s reputation as a leader in refugee assistance, while others believe it is a necessary adjustment to manage the growing number of displaced persons.
