Elon Musk has announced the possibility of constructing a vacuum tunnel under the Atlantic Ocean that would connect London and New York.
According to his estimates, the train in this tunnel could reach speeds of up to 4,800 km/h, which would reduce travel time to just one hour. The founder of SpaceX and Tesla believes his company can execute this ambitious project at a significantly lower cost than other experts estimate. Musk already has experience in building similar infrastructure, notably in Las Vegas.
However, despite Musk’s optimism, the realization of such a large-scale project faces enormous challenges. Experts estimate the cost of building the tunnel at $20 trillion and point out that creating such infrastructure will require substantial time and resources.
As an alternative to the vacuum train, other concepts for high-speed transportation are being considered, such as supersonic aircraft and spacecraft. SpaceX is also working on the Starship rocket, which could transport passengers from London to New York in less than half an hour.
