In a move that reflects the ever-shifting nature of politics, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced her resignation from the presidency of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group.
During a political meeting for her party, Brothers of Italy, Meloni explained that, following the European Parliament elections, she felt her work was complete. She admitted that the ECR needed a full-time president with more energy and focus, so she plans to dedicate herself to her role as Italy’s leader.
In her stead, Meloni threw her support behind former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, who has made it clear that together, they will “fight the evil” threatening Europe’s future. He later gave Meloni a copy of The Lord of the Rings at her party’s annual event, with the inscription, “Let’s fight the evil. Together, the light will prevail. We shall defeat Mordor!”
Meloni took the opportunity to remind Europe of its lost competitive edge and stressed the need for courageous leadership. She argued that while Europe has plenty of strategies, it often lacks the tools or the willingness to apply them. Her sharp criticism also targeted the Green Deal, asserting that ecological policies shouldn’t be forced “in opposition to people.” Urging action on illegal migration and EU economic stagnation, Meloni pointed out the pressing need for solutions that put Europe’s interests first.
Morawiecki’s upcoming leadership could bring new energy to the ECR as both he and Meloni aim to guide Europe back to its roots and restore its strength.
