Slovak President Peter Pellegrini has stated that negotiations between Russia and Ukraine are necessary to achieve peace, and Ukraine will likely need to make territorial concessions.
In an interview with STVR, Pellegrini emphasized the importance of a realistic approach to the situation.
When it comes to peace, we need to remain realistic. At this point, it is unlikely that anyone in Europe, among those who think rationally, believes that peace can be achieved without some territorial losses for Ukraine, the president said.
Pellegrini, a close ally of Prime Minister Robert Fico, previously served as prime minister from 2018 to 2020. In 2023, he formed a coalition with Fico’s party Direction – Social Democracy (Smer-SD), known for its Eurosceptic and populist stances.
In April 2024, Pellegrini won the presidential election with 53.12% of the vote, defeating former Foreign Minister Ivan Korčok.
