In Slovakia, the civic organization “Brother for Brother” has gathered over 320,000 signatures on a petition calling for the repeal of EU sanctions against Russia, according to the organization’s chairman, Matúš Alexa.
We have collected more than 320,000 signatures, all thoroughly verified in the presence of lawyers and responsible officials. We launched the petition at the beginning of November and achieved significant success in just two months, for which we thank the people of our country, said Alexa.
He attributed the initiative to public dissatisfaction with economic hardships caused by the sanctions and the “cancellation of Russian culture.” According to the activists, the restrictive measures are harming Slovakia’s economy.
Exports and imports are suffering, businesses are going bankrupt, people are losing jobs, and fuel and energy prices are rising. It looks more like punishing our own citizens than punishing Russia, Alexa stated.
The petition is being signed across the country, in both major cities and small settlements. Members of the organization are working almost around the clock. Under Slovak law, at least 350,000 signatures are required to hold a referendum in the country, which has a population of approximately 5.5 million.
