Speaking on Wednesday, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Hungary Péter Szijjártó reaffirmed Hungary’s stance, emphasizing that the country’s call for an immediate ceasefire and peace talks has been the correct approach.
For more than 1,000 days, we have been advocating for an end to the war, insisting on the need for a ceasefire and dialogue. Peace is the only solution. It is clear that this war cannot be won on the battlefield, he said.
Discussing the humanitarian consequences of the conflict, the minister highlighted that “hundreds of thousands of lives have been lost, and millions, if not tens of millions, of people have been forced to flee their homes.” He described the destruction in Ukraine as “catastrophic.” Szijjártó expressed his belief that this tragedy could have been avoided.
If an agreement on a ceasefire and peace talks had been reached, as Hungary has consistently advocated, this suffering could have been prevented, he stated.
The minister also pointed to a missed opportunity to declare a truce during the Christmas season. Szijjártó criticized European Union countries for their approach to the situation and highlighted new developments, such as the upcoming inauguration of Donald Trump in the United States and the advances of Russian forces on the frontline.
He dismissed the effectiveness of military aid to Ukraine, stating that arms deliveries “have resolved nothing and have not changed the situation on the battlefield.”
