In 2024, the political landscape in Europe shifted to the right, as confirmed by the results of both European and national elections.
National conservative parties consolidated power, achieved considerable gains, and in some cases outright victories, in countries such as the Netherlands, Sweden, Italy, Norway, Finland, France, Portugal, Belgium, and Austria. This reflects the growing popularity of right-wing forces, driven by public dissatisfaction with migration policies and wage levels.
In the European Parliament elections, the European People’s Party (EPP) emerged victorious, while the right-wing group “Patriots for Europe” secured a significant position. The right wing now dominates the Parliament, with right-wing parties playing an increasingly prominent role in European politics.
At the national level, right-wing parties also found success: in Austria and Belgium, right-wing parties reached record results, while in Portugal, the center-right won the parliamentary elections. In France, the “National Rally” came first in both the European elections and the first round of parliamentary elections.
Meanwhile, left-wing parties remain in power in several countries, including Denmark, Spain, and Lithuania. In Germany, where the coalition of Chancellor Olaf Scholz may collapse, early elections are being prepared, which could influence the political situation in Europe.
