Sweden’s parliament rallies behind cousin marriage ban

A growing wave of support in Parliament is backing a proposed ban on cousin marriages in Sweden. The initiative, led by the Tidö parties, has found backing from various factions across the political spectrum.

The Environment Party, Left Party, and Center Party have all come out in favor of the ban, signaling a broad consensus that cousin marriages should no longer be allowed in the country. According to Echo, this shift has sparked widespread discussions.

Even the Social Democrats, who once firmly opposed criminalizing cousin marriages, are now wavering. They’re waiting for insights from the government’s ongoing investigation into the matter before taking a firm stance.

The center-right Tidö parties’—the Moderates, Sweden Democrats, and Christian Democrats—proposal has ignited significant debate, and several referral bodies are expected to weigh in over the next few months.
